The world we are living in is the tapestry of life representations encoded in multifaceted traditions and cultures. The better we understand how different we are, the smoother our coexistence will be.This is a gateway to accepting global diversity while celebrating our identity.It is also an efficient tool for minimizing cross-cultural misunderstandings and avoiding communicative failures poisoning our lives. When teaching the crash course on Country Studies in Shanghai several years ago, I could see the Significant progress in the students’ understanding of the culturally related content of the curriculum. The students who are exposed to cultural studies will benefit sooner when fitting into multicultural environments face to face as international students or preparing themselves for real-life tapestry worldwide.
02BANZCultural Activity是一扇大门
Olena博士的Cultural Activity把课堂带到教室外，用City Walk的形式去学习语言、了解不同国家的建筑、文化习俗，对于很多孩子来说都是非常新奇的一种方式。在Olena博士看来，这堂课像是一扇大门，既能让学生展示自己文化中独特的地方，也能通过这里重新认识这个世界，看到多样化的一面。

“同时， Cultural Activity也像是一种工具，能够最大程度减少同学们在跨文化交际中的误解，解决我们在异国他乡的沟通问题。以我的经验来讲，越早去接触这种文化学习的学生，未来出国留学时也能更加适应多元文化环境，更好地应对多种文化共存的世界。”

My premise is that the world is a big classroom, and life is the teacher. However, the lessons provided by the professionally trained teachers inside the classrooms should be linked to the present-day reality and thus facilitate the learners’ integration into the rapidly changing and challenging modern world. My teaching philosophy has been shaped and tuned in each of the perspectives of myself as a learner, a parent, and a teacher exposed to different cultural environments throughout my life, China and Australia included. The prerequisite for my teaching endeavours is positioning myself in the shoes of today’s learners and asking myself: “Would I like to be taught this way? “. When preparing cultural activities, I pre-tour the venues and try to anticipate what could be engaging, thoughtprovoking or just mind-blowing for this cohort of students. I also ask my son who is a teenager what needs to be tweaked. Planning the language input and empowering them with the tools for the desired outcome, I try to evoke their interest in the venue by contextualising it to the related real-life topic and unveiling the potential further discoveries. On top of that, I keep customising any curriculum to the needs of the target students.
03BANZ语言学习的唯一诀窍
经历了几个月的澳洲学习时间，这次参加交换的BANZer，语言水平也在肉眼可见的快速提升，归功于同学们的努力、纯英文的交流环境、老师们的悉心付出，以及花样繁多的课堂形式。

The students embarking on this unparalleled study tour should be advised that such an extraordinary English-speaking environment is a tremendous booster but NOT a substitute for consistent language learning. It is not a magic pill or a chip that will turn you into a native speaker overnight. Spending even an extended chunk of time here does not result in language proficiency falling into your lap. The rules of the game are the same – consistency, persistence and practice. Be smart to maximise the efficiency of the heaven-sent opportunities provided to you by the Program and generously supported by your parents.

Like any group of learners, they are different in their aspirations, expectations and perseverance. Yet, the best thing about this pilot project group is that they did face the challenge. The format is different, the activities are diverse and far more engaging, yet it is not just about fun and playing around.
